Erie Rallies Back for Five Consecutive Win

The Erie SeaWolves earned their fifth straight victory by defeating the Reading Fightin Phils 4-3 on Friday at UPMC Park. The SeaWolves last won five consecutive games this season from July 3-8.

Reading starter Griff McGarry loaded the bases in the first. He hit Andrew Navigato with a pitch and walked Andre Lipcius and Parker Meadows. Quincy Nieporte cashed in with a sac fly to bring in Navigato and give Erie a 1-0 lead.

Jhailyn Ortiz led off with a double off of Markus Solbach in the second. Wendell Rijo laid down a sac bunt to move Ortiz to third. Aldrem Corredor poked an RBI single to bring in Ortiz. Vito Friscia roped a ground-rule double to advance Corredor to third. AJ Graffanino knocked in a run with a single to left to pull Reading ahead, 2-1.

Solbach received the no-decision after 1.1 innings of work. He allowed two runs on four hits, walking none, and striking out one

The Fightin Phils added to their lead in the third. Simon Muzziotti began the frame with a single. He stole second and Ortiz drove him in with a single to put Reading on top, 3-1.

McGarry received a no-decision after five hitless innings and allowed one earned run.

The SeaWolves rallied in the sixth. Nieporte singled off of Trevor Bettencourt for Erie’s first hit of the game. Dane Myers singled Nieporte to second and Dillon Dingler picked up an RBI single to cut the deficit to 3-2. Dingler’s base hit prompted an errant throw to the plate from Simon Muzziotti, which allowed the runners to advance to second and third. Francisco Morales uncorked a wild pitch and Myers came to score to tie the game 3-3.

Myers drove in the go-ahead run with a solo blast in the eighth against Billy Sullivan to make it a 4-3 game. It was his 15th long ball of the season.

Elvis Alvarado (1-0) tossed two scoreless and hitless innings in his Double-A debut, allowing one walk and striking out one.
