The SeaWolves let another late lead slip away as they were walked off on by the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, 6-5, on Tuesday night at NYSEG Stadium.
Binghamton jumped ahead in the bottom of the first against Erie starter Tyler Alexander. Levi Michael led off and reached on an error. Michael moved to third on a Jeff McNeil base hit and scored on a two-out, Jhoan Urena single for a 1-0 lead.
The SeaWolves took the lead in the top of the third against Binghamton starter Joseph Shaw. With two outs, Jacob Robson was hit by a pitch and Will Maddox singled to keep the inning going for Josh Lester. Lester doubled home both baserunners for a 2-1 lead. Blaise Salter singled home Lester making it 3-1.
The Rumble Ponies made it a one-run game in the last of the third when Peter Alonso belted a solo home run, his 10th of the season.
Binghamton then tied the game in the fourth. Urena and Kevin Taylor started the inning with back-to-back singles. Tim Tebow singled home Urena with one out, making it a 3-3 game.
Erie regained the lead in the fifth. Sergio Alcántara led off with a double and moved to third on a Robson sacrifice bunt. Alcantara scored on a wild pitch to give the 'Wolves a 4-3 lead.
The SeaWolves went back ahead by two runs in the top of the sixth. Dominic Ficociello led off with a walk, stole second and moved to third on a Jake Rogers fly out to right. Ficociello scored on a Danny Woodrow sacrifice fly to left for the 5-3 advantage.
Binghamton cut into the lead in the seventh. Champ Stuart and Michael started the inning with back-to-back singles. With one out, Alonso singled home Stuart making it 5-4.
Erie held the lead into the ninth inning. Reliever Mark Ecker retired the first two batters before giving up the game-tying home run to McNeil and the game-winning home run to Alonso.
Rumble Ponies reliever Eric Hanhold (3-1) earned the win tossing 1.2 scoreless frames with a walk and a strikeout.
Ecker (2-3) took the loss allowing two runs on two hits with no walks and a strikeout in 0.2 innings.
Despite hurling another quality start, Alexander took the no-decision for the SeaWolves. He allowed four runs, three earned, on nine hits with a walk and six strikeouts in six innings.
Erie looks to avoid the sweep on Wednesday night against the Rumble Ponies at 6:35 p.m. Righty Beau Burrows (4-2, 2.35 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Andrew Church (1-4, 5.57 ERA).
