ERIE, PA - The Erie SeaWolves (17-16) outhit the Richmond Flying Squirrels (12-21) on Monday night at UPMC Park, but dropped the series opener, 6-5. The Squirrels committed a franchise-record seven errors in the game.
The Flying Squirrels struck first with a Will Maddox leadoff home run off of SeaWolves starter Alex Faedo in the top of the first inning.
Erie tied the game at one in the bottom of the first, thanks to a pair of Richmond errors. Derek Hill reached on an error by the third baseman and stole his sixth base of the season. He advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher and scored on a two-out Kody Eaves knock.
Richmond quickly regained the lead in the second. After loading the bases on Faedo, Jin-De Jhang singled home Jonah Arenado for a 2-1 lead.
The Squirrels continued to add to their lead with a pair of home runs. In the fourth, Gio Brusa sent a solo blast to right and in the fifth, Chris Shaw connected on a three-run shot for a 6-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, Sergio Alcantara led off with a single and Derek Hill followed with a base hit to put runners on the corners. Isaac Paredes then reached on the third Richmond error, which scored Alcantara, and Jake Rogers followed with an RBI groundout, plating Hill. Eaves then reached on an infield single and Paredes came in after the fourth Flying Squirrels error to make it a 6-4 game.
Erie closed the gap to a run in the seventh. Paredes led off with a single to extend his hitting streak to nine-straight games. He later scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Jose Azocar making it 6-5. The SeaWolves would not get any closer.
Nolan Blackwood and Drew Carlton combined for four scoreless innings in relief, but the offense could not take advantage of the final three Richmond errors. Erie left a combined 11 men on base, seven of them coming in the final four frames.
Eaves and Hill recorded multi-hit games but for the seventh time in 2019, Erie lost a game decided by one run.
Faedo (2-2) took the loss for Erie allowing six runs on six hits with two walks while tying a career-high with 10 strikeouts.
The SeaWolves and Squirrels meet in the middle game of the series on Tuesday night at UPMC Park at 6:05 p.m. RHP Anthony Castro (1-0, 4.42 ERA) will toe the rubber against LHP Caleb Baragar (0-0, 0.00 ERA).
