The Erie SeaWolves (42-49) suffered a 4-2 loss to the Altoona Curve (48-40) to drop their second consecutive series Saturday.
Altoona jumped on Erie starter Kyle Dowdy in the first inning. Stephen Alemais nailed a single to get aboard, followed by a Bryan Reynolds walk. Will Craig cracked an RBI-double to left to bring in the game's first run. Jordan George leaked a single into the outfield to score Reynolds, and then Logan Hill batted in Craig to complete a three run top of the first for Altoona.
The SeaWolves brought the game to within two in the fifth inning. Will Maddox drove a sac fly to right field to drive in Cam Gibson on Tate Scioneaux, but Erie ended up leaving two runners on base in the inning. After five innings of play, the Curve stayed on top 3-1.
Altoona added another run in the seventh inning on Dowdy. Cole Tucker worked a single on the righty, and then was pushed to second on an Alemais bunt. Dowdy walked Reynolds for the third time, prompting his exit of the ball game. Sandy Baez then walked two straight batters, bringing in Cole Tucker to score to elevate the lead to 4-1. After the walks, Baez fanned Logan Hill and Bralin Jackson to leave the bases loaded for the Curve.
Erie tried to make it interesting in the bottom of the ninth inning. Matt Eckelman walked Cam Gibson with one out, and then surrendered a single to Sergio Alcántara for hirs third hit of the game. With runners on the corners, Will Maddox knocked in a run for Erie on a single to bring the score to 4-2. Eckelman hung in there, striking out Daz Cameron and forcing Lester to ground out to end the game.
Scioneaux (2-1) earned the win after allowing only one run on six hits and one walk in 3.0 IP with a strikeout. Dowdy (2-3) received the loss for Erie, allowing four runs on eight hits and four walks while fanning eight batters. Eckelman picked up his third save after working the final two innings for Altoona, only giving up one run on three hits and two strikeouts.
The series will end Sunday at UPMC Park between Erie and Altoona. RHP Beau Burrows (6-6, 3.83 ERA) takes the mound for the SeaWolves to duel with RHP Pedro Vasquez (2-5, 4.65 ERA) for the Curve at 1:35 PM.
