The New Hampshire Fisher Cats (42-28) triumphed in a back and forth extra-innings showdown Tuesday at UPMC Park, edging the SeaWolves (31-38) 5-4 in 10 innings.
Despite the team loss, Tigers prospect Alex Faedo labored exceptionally in his AA debut. The former 1st-round draft pick hurled 6.0 IP, allowed two runs on just two hits and two walks while fanning seven Fisher Cats in a no-decision.
New Hampshire jumped on the board first on Faedo. Jonathan Davis doubled to start off the game, followed by a Jon Berti walk. After Davis moved to third on a Bo Bichette fly out, Cavan Biggio brought him in on a sac fly to left to make it 1-0 Cats in the first.
Erie took the lead quickly in the bottom of the 1st on T.J. Zeuch. Daz Cameron tripled with two outs to put a runner on the corner. Eaves reached on a botched throw by Bichetter, allowing Cameron to tie the game. Two batters latter, Danny Woodrow cracked a RBI-double down the left field line to propel the SeaWolves to a 2-1 lead.
The Wolves remained on top until the sixth inning when Andrew Guillotte demolished his first home run of the season on Faedo to knot it up at 2-2.
The two Eastern League foes traded runs in extra innings. New Hampshire scored in the 8th on a Connor Panas groundout, matched by a Woodrow RBI-single in the bottom half to make it 3-3.
Bichette singled in Guillote to give the Cats the lead back in the 9th at 4-3. The SeaWolves manufactured a run on a sac fly from Jake Rogers to once again even the game at 4-4.
New Hampshire held out in the 10th inning after a sac fly to left from Gunnar Heidt. The SeaWolves failed to drive in Will Maddox or Cameron in the home half of the 10th, and New Hampshire won another extra inning contest 5-4.
Travis Bergen (1-0) earned his first win on the season for New Hampshire, accompanied by Kirby Snead's first save. Erie's Mark Ecker (3-5) received the loss after allowing one run in 1.1 IP. T.J. Zeuch worked well in a no-decision effort for New Hampshire, striking out seven in 7.0 IP with seven hits and two unearned runs.
The series ends tomorrow at 12:05 at UPMC Park. RHP Sandy Baez (1-5, 4.23 ERA) returns to the mound for Erie to duel with RHP Josh DeGraaf (1-4, 6.55 ERA).
