It took 12 innings at UPMC Park on Friday night and the SeaWolves prevailed with a 2-1 win over the Reading Fightin Phils to open the four-game series.
Reading took the lead in the top of the second inning against SeaWolves starter Sandy Baez. Zach Green led off with a double off the wall in right and moved to third on a Deivi Grullon base hit. Jan Hernandez lifted a one-out sacrifice fly to right, scoring Green for a 1-0 lead.
Baez would take his third straight no-decision allowing a run on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts in five innings of work.
The SeaWolves tied the game in the bottom of the third against Reading starter Harold Arauz. Sergio Alcántara doubled with one out and scored on a Danny Woodrow base hit.
Arauz also took a no-decision allowing one run on four this with three walks and three strikeouts in 6.2 innings.
The game remained tied into extra innings. In the top of the 10th with the free runner on second base, Zac Houston, who came into the ballgame in the ninth, got the Fightins 1-2-3. Houston worked a season-high 2.1 scoreless frames and struck out a season-high four batters.
In the last of the 10th, Edgar Garcia walked the leadoff man but then retired the side in order, sending the game into the 11th.
Erie turned to Mark Ecker in the 11th who walked one batter and worked a scoreless frame while Reading went with Tyler Visa who walked a batter and worked a scoreless frame.
The 'Wolves got in trouble in the top of the 12 with reliever Matt Hall on the mound. With the free runner on second in Grullon, Hall walked Cornelius Randolph and Jan Hernandez, loading the bases with no outs. Hall struck out pinch hitter Jiandido Tromp and on a wild pitch, Grullon attempted to score but Erie catcher Jake Rogers fielded the ball off the backstop and tagged out the runner for a double play. Hall then struck out Emmanuel Marrero to retire the side with runners left in scoring position.
In the bottom of the 12th, Erie started with a pinch runner A.J. Simcox on second base and Dominic Ficociello at the plate. Simcox advanced to third on a wild pitch and then Ficociello sent a single through the right side with the infield in to plate the winning run.
It was the SeaWolves first extra innings win at home and their first walk-off win of the season.
Hall (1-2) earned the win for Erie tossing a scoreless frame with two walks and two strikeouts.
Visa (0-2) took the loss allowing an unearned run on one hit in one-plus innings of work.
The SeaWolves will look for their third straight win on Saturday night against Reading at 6:05 p.m. Righy Spencer Turnbull (2-3, 4.11 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against LHP JoJo Romero (0-4, 6.38 ERA).
