Former Em Earns MWL Pitcher Of The Week Honors

May 14, 2019

It's been quite a week for former Emeralds pitcher Derek Casey. A member of last season's NWL Championship team, Casey was announced today as the Midwest League's Pitcher of the Week for May 6-12.

It's been quite a week for former Emeralds pitcher Derek Casey. A member of last season's NWL Championship team, Casey was announced today as the Midwest League's Pitcher of the Week for May 6-12.

Casey was a clear choice to receive the honor after doing most of the heavy lifting in the South Bend Cubs' recent no-hitter, a dual effort between Casey and fellow Ems alum Peyton Remy on May 6. The former 9th round pick out of the University of Virginia tossed seven perfect innings while striking out a career-high six batters against the Cedar Rapids Kernels before Remy came in and closed the door over the final two frames.
The no-no was just the second in South Bend Cubs history.
Casey, who is slated to start for South Bend tonight, will head to the mound having not allowed a run over his past 11 innings pitched (2 starts). He'll also be aiming to give South Bend its fourth consecutive victory while potentially pushing the Cubs into a tie for first place. South Bend currently sits just one game out of the top spot in the MWL's Eastern Division.
