From January 12-14, the Chicago Cubs held their annual fan event, Cubs Convention. Taking place in the city of Chicago, Cubs Con as it is colloquially known, is the best place for fans to not only get autographs from current and former players, but also meet the Front Office staff and ask questions regarding the Cubs and all of the minor league affiliates.

The Emeralds were there interacting with fans and providing updates on all of the Q&A's that were happening during the convention. Here are some highlights:

  • Thousands of fans packed the halls of the Convention to get their chance to ask Cubs brass about the state of the team, free agent deals, and minor league prospects.
  • Former Ems Ian Happ and Dillon Maples, both of whom were called up in 2017, signed autographs for fans and were the talk of the Convention because of their ability. Maples earned high praise from Cubs' Director of Player Development, Jaron Madison, who said that Maples' slider was one that "no one can hit and he can throw it in any count."
  • Fans could also stop by and chat with the affiliates at their various booths. Each team had giveaways for fans and a scavenger hunt to win various prizes!
  • We raffled off a free wine tasting and tour to one lucky fan at the convention, along with a cut-out standee of Ian Happ to an ecstatic Happ fanatic!

Cubs Con has marked the beginning of the baseball season, with players flying to Arizona just a couple of weeks after the conclusion of Cubs Con to start Spring Training. Ian Happ and Dillon Maples were on hand to give fans an experience they would never forget, while the front office spoke about rising pitchers (and former Emeralds) Adbert Alzolay and Jose Albertos. Both players, along with Oscar De La Cruz, Alex Lange and Brendon Little, round out the top five and give the Cubs a stable of young pitchers that fans can look forward to in the future.
Fans can also look forward to young position players, such as 2017 Emerald Aramis Ademan, who will be moving quickly through the system once he gets into his second year of full time baseball. Though Cubs Con is the first chance to see the players once they get to the big leagues, you can always be the first to see the best prospects come through the system, year after year, at PK Park!
