Blazing Bats End in a Nail-Biting Loss, 9-8

Everett and Tri-City hit a combined 10 home runs

EVERETT, Wash. – In an incredible show of offense for both teams, the Everett AquaSox (40-22) fell just short of a comeback victory, losing to the Tri-City Dust Devils (25-38), 9-8.

EVERETT, Wash. – In an incredible show of offense for both teams, the Everett AquaSox (40-22) fell just short of a comeback victory, losing to the Tri-City Dust Devils (25-38), 9-8.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Brendon Davis and Adrian Rondon started the game off with a bang, each hitting a two-run home run in the top of the first. Zach DeLoach led off the bottom of the inning with a solo home run, leaving the Frogs trailing 4-1.

Two home runs and a sacrifice fly in the third inning drove in four more runs for the Dust Devils, giving them an 8-1 lead. DeLoach crushed his second home run of the game in the sixth inning, scoring two runs for the Frogs.

Keinner Piña drove in the Dust Devils’ ninth run in the top of the eighth with a solo home run, but the Frogs were quick to respond. In the bottom of the inning, two-run home runs from Patrick Frick and Jake Anchia quickly closed the gap and the ‘Sox entered the ninth inning trailing by two runs.

RHP Kyle Hill faced three batters in the top of the ninth, drawing two groundouts and allowing no runs. In the bottom of the inning, Cody Grosse crushed the 10th home run of the game to score the AquaSox’ eighth run. With the tying run at first and the winning run at the plate, the Dust Devils’ Brandon White ended the game with an incredible diving catch in foul territory, allowing Tri-City to defeat the Frogs 9-8.

WRAPPING IT UP

On the mound, Franklin Van Gurp made his AquaSox debut, pitching two complete innings with five strikeouts. At the plate, the Frogs registered eight hits, five of which were home runs. DeLoach led the way, going 3-for-4 with one double, two home runs, three RBIs and three runs scored.

LOOKING AHEAD

The Frogs return to Funko Field on Saturday, July 17 for the fifth of six games against the Tri-City Dust Devils. Saturday jam-packed with promotions. The Seattle Mariners’ Rally Kid will be throwing out the first pitch, the team will be wearing golf-inspired jerseys for the Mystery Jersey Night Auction and there will be postgame fireworks. Plus, it’s Domestic Violence Awareness Night, presented by the Joe Torre Safe at Home Foundation.
