Emeralds Erupt For Four Homers, Defeat Sox 5-1

EUGENE, OR: The Eugene Emeralds and Everett AquaSox combined for five home runs that accounted for all six of the game's runs, as the Emeralds won the six-game series opener, 5-1. AquaSox starting pitcher Juan Mercedes and Emeralds starter Mason Black were locked up in a pitching duel early on

EUGENE, OR: The Eugene Emeralds and Everett AquaSox combined for five home runs that accounted for all six of the game's runs, as the Emeralds won the six-game series opener, 5-1.

AquaSox starting pitcher Juan Mercedes and Emeralds starter Mason Black were locked up in a pitching duel early on as the game remained scoreless heading into the bottom of the fourth inning. Hunter Bishop finally put the Emeralds on the board in the fourth inning with a solo home run over the left field fence for a 1-0 lead. The AquaSox tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fifth inning when Dariel Gomez hit a solo home run to right field.

Emeralds moved back into the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Luis Toribio hit a solo home run and Eugene led 2-1. Vaun Brown extended the lead with a solo home run in the sixth inning and Patrick Bailey closed out the scoring in the seventh inning with a two-run home run that scored Jairo Pomares.

Black pitched six innings for the Emeralds, allowing three hits and one earned run on the Gomez homer, one walk and five strikeouts. Mercedes also pitched six innings, allowing four hits, three runs, no walks and tied a career high with ten strikeouts. Gomez hit his 13th home run of the season, putting him back in the Northwest League lead in the category. Alberto Rodriguez went two-for-four with a double. He is currently 2nd in the league with 17 doubles this season.

Game two of the six game series is scheduled for Wednesday June 29. RHP Bryce Miller (3-2, 2.25 ERA) will start for the AquaSox and RHP Jake Wong (4-2, 4.34 ERA) will take the mound for the Emeralds.
