METAIRIE, Louisiana - The Round Rock Express (32-35) used a four-run fourth inning to top the New Orleans Baby Cakes (23-42) by a final score of 6-3 in Thursday night's series finale at the Shrine on Airline.
Express reliever LHP Jimmy Reyes (2-1, 2.19) picked up the win after blanking the Baby Cakes on four hits in 2.1 innings of relief. New Orleans starter LHP Kelvin Marte (1-4, 5.68) suffered the loss following a performance in which he surrendered five runs on six hits in 3.1 innings.
Round Rock starter RHP Anthony Bass was removed from the contest after only 2.2 innings. The righty allowed three runs on four hits and a walk while striking out five.
Both teams traded runs in the second inning. First up, E-Train 3B Will Middlebrooks doubled before swiping third base on a Ronald Guzmán groundout. A Peter O'Brien sacrifice fly in the next plate appearance opened the scoring. New Orleans answered instantly as 1B Cal Towey doubled then scored on a David Vidal single.
The Baby Cakes jumped ahead with a pair of runs in the third inning. SS Peter Mooney opened the frame with a walk, then DH KC Serna followed up with a single. Back-to-back singles courtesy of 3B Nick Noonan and CF Brandon Barnes managed to score a pair of runs to put the home side ahead.
The E-Train manufactured a big inning in the very next frame to grab the lead for good. Middlebrooks kickstarted the rally with a walk before Guzman and CF Drew Stubbs walked to load the bases for SS Jason Martinson . The infielder delivered with a line drive double that scored two runs to level the contest at 3-3. RF Preston Beck and LF Travis Snider teamed up to drive in two more runs with a pair of singles.
After four scoreless innings from the Express bullpen, Round Rock tacked on an insurance run in the ninth as Martinson doubled then scored on a Drew Robinson single. Closer RHP Preston Claiborne emerged from the bullpen for the ninth inning, working around a pair of hits to record his 12th save of the season.
Round Rock and New Orleans complete their series on Friday night. E-Train RHP Clayton Blackburn (1-0, 4.15) is scheduled to start against Baby Cakes RHP Scott Copeland (4-7, 6.39). First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
