ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Texas Rangers have recalled INF Tyler Smith from the Triple-A Round Rock Express, the club announced Wednesday morning. In a corresponding move, RHP Nick Martinez was optioned back to Round Rock.
The Rangers acquired Smith on a waiver claim from the Seattle Mariners on July 30 and assigned him to Round Rock. In 10 games with the Express, Smith batted .211 (4-19) with a double and an RBI. He made starts at second base, third base and shortstop with the E-Train.
The infielder began the season with the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers, batting .239 (68-285) with 13 doubles, six home runs and 28 RBI in 84 games. He made his major league debut on June 2 after being recalled by the Mariners. Smith appeared in 10 games with the big league club, hitting .188 (3-16) with a double and an RBI. He was optioned to Tacoma on June 21 and designated for assignment on July 28.
Martinez was recalled by Texas on July 31 and appeared in two games before his most recent option. He went 0-1 with an 11.57 ERA (12 ER/9.1 IP) in two starts during what was his third stint with the club. Martinez has posted a 2-0 record with a 3.42 ERA (9 ER/23.2 IP) in five appearances, including four starts, with the Express this season.
The Round Rock Express and Colorado Springs Sky Sox face off in a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon. Express RHP Tyler Wagner (3-9, 6.46) is set to start against Sky Sox RHP Junior Guerra (1-1, 3.18) in game one while Round Rock RHP Anthony Bass (1-2, 4.00) is scheduled to get the nod versus Colorado Springs RHP Paolo Espino (4-1, 3.72) in game two. First pitch in game one at Security Service Field is slated for 5:00 p.m. CDT. Game two will follow approximately 30 minutes after game one.
