COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado - The Colorado Springs Sky Sox (69-44) picked up a 4-2 win over the Round Rock Express (54-62) in the first game of a doubleheader between the two teams on Thursday afternoon. E-Train DH Travis Snider launched his eighth home run of the season in the defeat.
Express RHP Tyler Wagner (3-10, 6.49) suffered the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits in five innings. He struck out six and walked four. Sky Sox LHP Wei-Chung Wang (6-1, 2.19) picked up the win despite allowing a run on a hit in one total inning of relief. Colorado Springs starter RHP Junior Guerra held Round Rock to one run on five hits and two walks in 4.2 innings.
The Sky Sox wasted little time jumping on the scoreboard. 2B Mauricio Dubón singled with one out in the top of the first. Back-to-back two-out singles courtesy of DH Ivan De Jesus and 3B Nate Orf sent Dubon around the bases to give Colorado Springs a 1-0 edge.
Round Rock leveled the game in the top of the third as 3B Pete Kozma worked a leadoff single before advancing to second on an ensuing Drew Stubbs groundout. After stealing third base, Kozma raced home on a Guerra wild pitch.
However, the Sky Sox responded with a solo run in the bottom of the frame. LF Kyle Wren opened the inning with a walk. Following a Brett Phillips double that left a pair of runners in scoring position, De Jesus sent a sacrifice fly into right field, allowing Wren to tag and score the go-ahead run.
The home side tacked on another run in the fourth. 1B Chris Colabello worked his team's third leadoff walk of the game before moving to second on a Kirk Nieuwenhuis single. C René García moved both runners 90 feet closer to home with a sacrifice bunt. During the next at-bat, Wagner skipped a wild pitch past C Brett Hayes , allowing Colabello to race home with a crucial insurance run.
In the sixth, Snider connected on an 0-1 offering from Wang, lining the pitch into the scoreboard in left-center field to trim the gap to 3-2. However, Colorado Springs again responded with a run on the bottom of the inning. Orf lined a double into left field, chasing Wagner from the game. Colabello grounded out in the next at-bat, moving Orf to third in the process. E-Train reliever RHP Tayler Scott then lost control of a 2-2 offering, allowing Orf to score on a wild pitch.
Game two of today's doubleheader at Security Service Field is set for 7:40 p.m. CDT. Express RHP Anthony Bass (1-2, 4.00) is scheduled to take the mound opposite Sky Sox RHP Paolo Espino (4-1, 3.72).
