Fayetteville, NC - Houston Astros pitching prospect Forrest Whitley has been added to the Single-A Fayetteville roster and is scheduled to start tonight’s game against the Augusta GreenJackets, the club announced on Wednesday. He was previously with the Florida Complex League Astros where he began a rehab assignment with one appearance on June 16th.

Whitley, 24, was Houston’s first-round pick (17th overall) in 2016 out of Alamo Heights High School (Texas). The right-handed starting pitching prospect has missed the last two seasons with the minor league shutdown in 2020 and Tommy John surgery in 2021, last pitching at the full season ranks with Corpus Christi in September of 2019. He still ranks as the Astros No.4 overall prospect, per MLB.com.

Prior to the 2021 season, MLB.com ranked Whitley third among all right-handed pitching prospects in the game, behind only Casey Mize (DET) and Nate Pearson (TOR). He has carried high prospect status throughout his career, ranked as a top 10 prospect in all of baseball in 2018 (#9) and 2019 (#7). He is currently on the Astros 40-man roster, added before the start of the 2021 season and using his first option year last season.

He has pitched in parts of four minor league seasons (2016-2019) with the Astros, going 9-15 with a 4.71 ERA in 57 total games (47 starts), recording 289 strikeouts in 197.0 career innings. During the 2019 season, Whitley pitched across four different levels of the Astros system, including Fayetteville (7/24/19 - 7/30/19), going 1-0 with a 2.16 ERA (2 starts), 11 strikeouts and one walk across 8.1 total innings.

Whitley was also selected to the 2018 SiriusXM All-Star Futures game, and was named a 2017 MiLB.com Organizational All-Star after advancing to Double A Corpus Christi in his first full minor league season.

He was selected by Houston with the 17th overall pick in the first round of the 2016 draft after posting a 9-1 record and a 0.31 ERA in his senior season at Alamo Heights High School in San Antonio, TX.

Whitley will pitch Wednesday night, June 22nd, in the second game of the Woodpeckers six-game series against the GreenJackets at Segra Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm EST.
