The Fayetteville Woodpeckers saw their five game win streak snapped in a lopsided loss at Segra Stadium to the Down East Wood Ducks. Fayetteville was nearly held scoreless for just the fourth time this season as the Wood Ducks racked up 11 runs to escape a sweep on Hay Street. Yanio Perez crushed a grand slam and Curtis Terry smacked a solo home run to highlight the offensive clinic put on by Down East. The Woodpeckers lone run of the game came off the bat of Miguelangel Sierra who hit a solo shot in the bottom of the ninth. Ultimately Fayetteville dropped the game 11-1, but still were victorious in the three contest series two games-to-one against Down East

Shawn Dubin (3-5) started his day on the mound by sending down the Wood Ducks in order to pitch a scoreless frame, but the outing got a little bumpier in the second. Yohel Pozo and Diosbel Arias knocked back-to-back singles, followed by Bubba Thompson loading the bases when he was clipped with a pitch. Dubin got the first out by fanning Sherten Apostel, but the Wood Ducks scored their first run thanks to a sacrifice fly off the bat of Yanio Perez that scored Pozo. The Woodies added another score when Josh Altmann sliced his 11th RBI of the year on a base hit to right that brought home Arias, making it 2-0 Down East.
The Woodpeckers offense struggled to get anything going on Wood Ducks starter Scott Engler, who walked three batters and gave up just one infield single in his three innings of scoreless work. Engler's offense backed him up in the top of the third, sending nine to the plate and scoring four runs. Curtis Terry walked to start the inning and then Yohel Pozo smacked a single to put two on. Dubin quickly struck out two in a row, but then loaded the bases on another walk to Apostel. Then Yanio Perez stepped to the plate and launched one out of the ballpark to crush the fifth grand slam by a Fayetteville opponent this season. Perez not only tallied four more runs for Down East, he added his sixth homer this year as well. Dubin walked Josh Altmann after the grand slam leading to a pitching change by the Woodpeckers, who sent out Tanner Duncan. The Fayetteville reliever quickly got the final out to stop the bleeding, but the Wood Ducks made it 6-0. In the next frame Down East did not waste much time adding another score, as Curtis Terry immediately smashed a solo shot to lead off the frame against Duncan. The Fayetteville bullpen arm finished that frame, but then gave up a double to start the top of the fifth, resulting in the Woodpeckers sending out Cesar Rosado to take over. With a runner on Rosado walked Atlmann, but then fanned the next three batters he faced to end the frame.
The Woodpeckers again drew back-to-back walks, this time with Cole Uvila (5-3) on the mound for Down East in the bottom of the fourth. With one away, Enmanuel Valdez and Miguelangel Sierra reached on base on balls, but Scott Schreiber hit into a double play to end the frame. Uvila finished off the night by tossing three innings scoreless innings through the sixth, allowing just one hit, and fanning six total batters.
Down East on the other hand could not stop scoring, hitting three singles in a row to load the bases against Rosado in the top of the sixth. Josh Atlmann notched his second and third RBIs of the night with a single laced to center that scored Arias and Apostel. With Fayetteville hurler Nivaldo Rodriguez on the mound, the Wood Ducks just continued scoring. Rodriguez fanned Sam Huff to start the frame, but then walked Hasuan Viera and gave up a single to Yohel Pozo. Now with two outs, Bubba Thompson smoked a triple to right field that brought home two more scores for Down East to make it 11-0. Jefferson Medina solidified the victory for the Wood Ducks, finishing off the Woodpeckers in the final three frames. In the bottom of the eighth Fayetteville got Cal Stevenson 90 feet away, but the runner was left stranded after Medina retired two in a row. The Woodpeckers finally tallied in the bottom of the ninth as Miguelangel Sierra hit his 12th bomb of the year with a solo shot with one gone in the frame. Scott Schreiber followed by finally stringing together the first hits of the game, knocking a base hit. However the Woodpeckers could not make anything else happen, falling short of an epic comeback in the ten run loss at Segra Stadium.
Fayetteville drops to 60-62 overall and falls 2.5 GB Down East for first place in the South Division. The Wood Ducks avoid the sweep and move to 81-41 on the year. The Woodpeckers don't have too much time to linger as they begin a three game tilt tomorrow at Frederick. First pitch against the Keys is set for 7:00pm.
