FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Matthew Barefoot’s solo home run in the bottom of the first inning set the tone for a big offensive night, as the Fayetteville Woodpeckers (2-5) rallied for ten runs on eleven hits and a 10-1 win over the Kannapolis (0-7) Cannonballers in the home opener at Segra Stadium.

Barefoot’s homer marked his third straight game with a home run and started what was a 3-for-4 night for the Dunn, N.C. native.

Alfredi Jimenez shined in his first start of the season, retiring the side in order in the first, and stranding a pair of runners in scoring position in the third. The right-hander allowed just one hit over 4.0 innings of work, striking out five and walking two in a no decision.

Leading 3-0 in the sixth, Nerio Rodriguez and Zach Daniels led the frame with consecutive walks and Justin Dirden doubled home Rodriguez with an RBI double. Following a Shay Whitcomb strikeout, Yeuris Ramirez singled to right field, scoring Daniels and Dirden and pushing the lead to 6-0.

Joe Perez helped spark another multi-run frame in the 8th, doubling into right field and plating Dirden and Whitcomb. Barefoot followed in the next at bat, singling against Garin Alston, driving home two, and jumping the lead to 10-1.

With the win, Fayetteville puts an end to a short two-game skid, improving to 2-5 while Kannapolis falls to 0-7 to begin the season.

Mark Moclair Jr. (1-0) picked up the win and Jared Kelley (0-1) suffered the loss.

The Woodpeckers will continue the six-game series with Kannapolis on Wednesday with a 6:30 p.m. ET first pitch. Brayan De Paula is scheduled to start for Fayetteville and Chase Solesky will start for the Cannonballers.
