Fayetteville, NC - The Fayetteville Woodpeckers (55-75, 24-41) ended the regular season with a dominant showing on the mound as Carlos Calderon, Nolan Devos, and Tyler Guilfoil combined for a shutout in a 3-0 victory over the Lynchburg Hillcats (63-68, 28-37) on Sunday afternoon at Segra Stadium. It was the ninth shutout this season for Fayetteville and the third in September alone.

Calderon started the day with three brilliant innings, retiring the side in order in the first before working around a pair of walks in the second. He returned for the third and retired the side in order again to complete three hitless frames.

Devos (W, 2-0) took over in the fourth, allowed the first two hitters to reach base and rebounded by striking out three in a row to escape the jam. The former Davidson pitcher made it a stretch of five straight strikeouts, punching out Joe Lampe and Joe Donovan to begin the fifth. He worked through a scoreless sixth inning as well before turning the shutout bid over to Tyler Guilfoil in the seventh.

Ryan Clifford provided the big swing of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. The 19-year-old drilled a three-run home run over the right-center field wall off Wardquelin Vasquez (L, 1-1) to break the deadlock and give Fayetteville the outright 3-0 advantage. The long-ball was the first for Clifford in his full-season pro career.

Guilfoil (SV, 2) carried the lead once entering in the seventh and was instantly locked in, striking out the side in order. He maneuvered around a leadoff walk in the eight, closing the inning with a pair of strikeouts. In the ninth, the Guilfoil sealed the win and ended the season with consecutive strikeouts of Isaiah Greene and Will Bartlett.

The Woodpeckers close out the 2022 regular season with a 55-75 overall record and will return to action in April of 2023.
