Woodpeckers Settle for Split With Mudcats Following Sunday Loss

Fayetteville, NC - The Fayetteville Woodpeckers (12-21) allowed five early-runs to the Carolina Mudcats (17-16) and trailed the majority of Sunday afternoon, dropping the series conclusion at Segra Stadium 12-6. On the offensive end, Fayetteville struck out 20 times while the pitching staff combined to walk 13 Carolina batters.

Deylen Miley’s (L, 2-2) start was short-lived after allowing five earned runs in the top of the second inning. Freylin Garcia steadied things out of the bullpen with 2.1 scoreless innings, but a grand-slam from Alberis Ferrer off Alex Santos in the fifth broke the game open at 9-1. Santos recovered with three scoreless innings after allowing the slam.

Fayetteville managed to score the next five runs of the contest. Jaxon Hallmark connected for an RBI double in the fifth and Victor Mascai added a two-run double of his own in the inning. Two more runs crossed in the seventh inning on an RBI double from Joey Loperfido and a fielding error by shortstop Eduardo Garcia.

Trailing 9-6 in the top of the ninth, Jayson Schroeder allowed the game to get out of reach with four walks, a hit batter, and three earned runs.

After an off day Monday, the Woodpeckers head on the road for a six-game series with the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers starting Tuesday, May 17th. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm ET at Atrium Health Ballpark in Kannapolis, NC.
