Fightin Phils lose twin bill in New Hampshire

Reading loses 5-2 in game one and 9-2 in game two

The Fightin Phils (46-66) lost both games to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (54-59) on Friday evening at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. The Fightin scored a total of four runs and now trail two games to one in the series.  

In game one, KC Hobson hit a one-out solo home run off Chris Bootcheck in the bottom of the 2nd inning to give the Fisher Cats a 1-0 lead. New Hampshire extended their lead to 5-0 off Bootcheck in the bottom of the 4th inning as they scored four runs. Corey Aldridge hit a RBI single to score Andy Burns who was on third base after an error by Raywilly Gomez. KC Hobson hit into a fielder's choice to score Aldridge and Michael Crouse followed with a RBI single to score Hobson. Jon Berti was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score the final run of the inning.

The Fightin Phils finally got to Scott Copeland in the top of the 6th inning with two outs. Jake Fox walked to jump start the inning then scored on a RBI single by Aaron Altherr and error by right-fielder Cory Aldridge. Brock Stassi brought Altherr home with a RBI double to put the Fightin Phils within three runs, 5-2.  

Chris Bootcheck (2-3) earned the loss as he allowed five runs through four innings off six hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Austin Wright tossed two scoreless innings in relief despite issuing two walks with three strikeouts.

In game two, New Hampshire took a 2-0 lead off Mike Nesseth on a two-run double by Jorge Flores that scored Yusuf Carter and Michael Crouse. An error by KC Serna made both of the runs unearned to Nesseth. The Fisher Cats chased Nesseth out of the game with two outs in the bottom of the third inning as they scored three runs to take a 5-0 lead. Jack Murphy hit a RBI single which was followed by a two-run double by Andy Fermin.

The Fightin Phils got back into the game in the top of the 4th inning as Aaron Altherr brought in a run on an error by Andy Burns and Peter Lavin hit a RBI single to score Jake Fox to put Reading within three runs 5-2. The Fisher Cats added insurance off reliever Matt Hoffman in the bottom of the 6th inning as they scored four runs to take a 9-2 lead. Andy Burns hit a two-run single and Mike McDade added a two-run single.  

Gregory Infante closed out the game for the Fisher Cats as he allowed one hit and one walk.  

Mike Nesseth (1-5) earned his fifth loss as he allowed five runs (three earned) in 2 2/3 innings pitched off seven hits and four strikeouts. Kyle Simon tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings as he gave up just one hit with one strikeout. Matt Hoffman allowed four runs in one inning with one walk issued and a strikeout.  

The Fightin Phils and New Hampshire Fisher Cats play tomorrow evening at 7:05 pm from Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. Severino Gonzalez (6-12, 5.12 ERA) will be making the start for the Fightin Phils.
