Fightins drop season home finale to Erie

Reading completes their home portion of their 2014 schedule

The Fightin Phils (59-75) lost to the Erie SeaWolves (64-69) 5-3 on Sunday afternoon despite a solid start from Aaron Nola. Peter Lavin extended his hitting streak to a season-high eight games.  

The Fightins scored first in the bottom of the 2nd inning with two outs. KC Serna and Logan Moore hit back-to-back singles with one out. After Edgar Duran popped out to second base for the second out of the inning, Carlos Alonso hit a RBI single off SeaWolves starter Jeff Ferrell to give Reading a 1-0 lead.

Dixon Machado tied the game at 1-1 off Aaron Nola in the top of the 3rd inning as he hit a solo home run to lead off the innings. Nola allowed just one run through five innings of work off four hits with one walk and five strikeouts.  

Austin Wright (2-4) came in to relief of Nola in the top of the 6th inning. He issued a walk to Devon Travis then gave up a RBI double to Dean Green who gave the SeaWolves a 2-1 lead. Steven Moya tied Erie's franchise mark with a two-run home run for this 34th home run on the season to give Erie a 4-1 lead.

Reading fought back in the bottom of the 6th inning off Ferrell as they cut Erie's lead to one run, 4-3. Brock Stassi and KC Serna hit back-to-back singles to begin the inning. Logan Moore walked to load the bases for Edgar Duran. Duran hit a sacrifice fly to score Stassi then in the next at-bat Carlos Alonso would do the same thing to score Serna.

Austin Wright left after giving up a walk and a single without recording an out in the top of the 7th inning. Nefi Ogando entered the game and issued a walk to Devon Travis while Dean Green got on with a fielder's choice after the out was recorded at home plate. Steven Moya hit a sacrifice fly to score Jason Krizan to extend Erie's lead to 5-3.

Austin Wright allowed four runs off four hits in one inning of work. He issued two walks. Nefi Ogando tossed two scoreless innings as he gave up two hits and two walks with one strikeout.  

The Fightin Phils finish out the 2014 season on the road as they head to Hadlock Field for a four-game series to take on the Portland Sea Dogs. Severino Gonzalez (9-12, 4.72 ERA) will get the start for the Fightin Phils on Monday night. First pitch is at 7:00 pm.
