Fightins shutout by Portland in series opener

Severino Gonzalez earns 13th loss as he only allows three runs

The Reading Fightin Phils (59-76) failed to score a run against the Portland Sea Dogs (85-50) as they lost 3-0 on Monday night. The Fightins were shutout for the first time since July 28th against the Sea Dogs at Hadlock Field.  

Severino Gonzalez gave up back-to-back hits to begin his outing in the bottom of the 1st inning as Portland would take a 1-0 lead. Shannon Wilkerson led off with a single and would score in the next at-bat as Mike Miller would hit a RBI double. David Chester led off the bottom of the 2nd inning with a home run off Gonzalez to give Portland a 2-0 lead.

Gonzalez gave up a lead-off double to Carson Blair to begin the bottom of the 4th inning. Stefan Welch hit a one-out double to score Blair and give Portland a 3-0 lead. Severino Gonzalez turned in six solid innings as he allowed three runs off six hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Kyle Simon tossed two scoreless innings in relief.  

The Fightin Phils and Portland Sea Dogs play tomorrow evening at 7:00 pm from Hadlock Field. Ryan O'Sullivan (5-8, 4.23 ERA) will start for Reading.
