(Erie, Pa) - The Reading Fightin Phils (22-13) are on a roll as they finished the sweep of the Erie SeaWolves (18-19) on Thursday morning by winning 8-3. They have now won five-straight games and are at their highest water mark of the season.
Andrew Pullin hit his ninth home run of the season off SeaWolves starter Myles Jaye (0-4) in the top of the first to give Reading a 1-0 lead. Mitch Walding hit a two-out RBI single in the top of the second off Jaye to give Reading a 2-0 lead. The RBI single was Walding's first with runners in scoring position and two outs this season.
Kody Eaves hit a three-run home run off Shane Watson in the bottom of the second to give Erie a 3-2 lead. The home run was the sixth allowed by Watson this season. Kyle Martin pinch-hit for Harold Martinez and hit a three-run home run off Jaye in the top of the third to give Reading a 5-3 lead. It was Martin's sixth home run of the season and the first pinch-hit home run by any Fightin Phils batter.
Reading scored two more runs off Jaye in the top of the fourth to extend the lead to 7-3. Osmel Aguila hit his first home run of the season and Pullin hit a two-out RBI single. Jaye left with two outs in the inning. Watson pitched just three innings before Mario Sanchez (2-0) came into the game to pitch in relief.
He pitched three scoreless innings while giving up just one hit with two strikeouts. Austin Davis entered the game to pitch in the bottom of the seventh. He pitched two scoreless innings. Walding hit a RBI double off SeaWolves pitcher Kurt Spomer in the top of the ninth to score Osmel Aguila, who tripled with two outs and extend Reading's lead to 8-3.
Jesen Therrien retired the side in the bottom of the ninth to finish the sweep of the SeaWolves.
Note: Chace Numata extended his hitting streak to 11-games with a double in the top of the fifth.
