The Fightin Phils (61-76) are trying to finish the season out strong as they defeated the Portland Sea Dogs (85-52) 5-2 on Wednesday night. Jake Fox and Logan Moore each homered while Adam Loewen earned his third win of the season.
Jake Fox took Keith Couch deep to begin the top of the 2nd inning to give Reading a 1-0 lead over the Sea Dogs. The home run for Fox was his 22nd on the season. Aaron Altherr singled in the next at-bat then scored on a single from Brock Stassi and an error by right-fielder Kevin Heller to give Reading a 2-0 lead. Couch retired KC Serna and Zach Collier in the following at-bats but gave up a two-run home run to Logan Moore that allowed Reading to jump out to a 4-0 lead over the Sea Dogs. The home run for Moore was his fourth on the season.
Portland got Adam Loewen in the bottom of the 5th inning as he loaded the bases without recording an out. He struck out Sean Coyle with the bases loaded then gave up a fielder's choice to David Chester that allowed Mike Brenly to score from third base to cut the Fightins lead to 4-1. Portland added another run off Loewen in the bottom of the 6th inning as Jonathan Roof scored on a RBI groundout from Mike Brently to bring themselves within two runs 4-2.
Albert Cartwright singled off Keith Couch in the top of the 7th inning with two outs to keep the inning alive for Carlos Alonso who hit a RBI double to give Reading a 5-2 lead. The hit and run would chase Couch out of the ballgame.
Adam Loewen (3-5) earned the win as he walked a season-high six batters through five innings as he allowed two runs off five hits with three strikeouts. Mike Nesseth tossed two scoreless innings in relief. Nefi Ogando earned his seventh save on the season, his first since May 25th against Akron as he struck out three batters and issued one walk in two innings of work.
The Fightin Phils and Portland Sea Dogs wrap up their season series tomorrow evening at Hadlock Field beginning at 6:00 pm. Hoby Milner (9-6, 4.33 ERA) will be making the start for the Fightin Phils.
