Former Fisher Cats Land on WBC Rosters

January 18, 2013
Several former Fisher Cats officially received the news this week they would be suiting up for their home county in the World Baseball Classic.  In addition to J.P. Arencibia, who will dress for Team USA for the second time in ten years, four ex-Fisher Cats will appear in this year's Classic beginning in early March.

Yan Gomes and Brazil are the surprise entry in the 16-team tournament after winning their qualifier last month.  Gomes played a key role, earning top player honors during the qualifying run.

Henderson Alvarez, now with the Miami Marlins, will be a part of the pitching staff for what should be one of the favorites, Venezuela.  Alvarez' team will also feature Triple Crown Winner and American League MVP Miguel Cabrera.

Three players are slated to pitch for Team Canada - Scott Richmond, Shawn Hill, and Trystan Magnuson.  Richmond, who will pitch in Korea this season, is on Canada's roster for the second time, although he didn't pitch in 2009.  Magnuson, a Fisher Cats reliever in 2012, will make his first appearance in the WBC.  Hill, who pitched in New Hampshire in 2010, is now in the Tigers organization.

The World Baseball Classic runs from March 2-19.
