Fisher Cats catcher to spend winter in Australia
October 17, 2013

Fisher Cats catcher Jack Murphy is headed back Down Under for the 2013-14 Australian Baseball League. Murphy was one of the most popular figures in the circuit last year, only in part because of his infamous mustache and shaggy locks.

Fans enjoyed the Floridian because he looked like he should be on the open seas plundering helpless ships, but also because he played very well for the Canberra Cavalry. As their everyday catcher, Murphy was a better-than-.300 hitter playing in 41 games on the season. He added five home runs during the regular season, and then hit .571 during Canberra's run to the title.

Murphy spent the majority of the 2013 season with New Hampshire, appearing in a team-high 56 games at catcher. He'll be joined on the Cavalry by fellow Blue Jays prospects - and potential 2014 Fisher Cats - Shane Opitz, Jon Berti, and Michael Crouse.

Canberra opens its 46-game ABL season on October 31, and Murphy and his teammates will all receive keys to the city for winning last year's championship.
