Squirrels Beede Named Pitcher of the Week

Giants Top Pitching Prospect Wins ERA Title
September 7, 2016

Richmond, VA -The Richmond Flying Squirrels, in conjunction with the Eastern League of Professional Baseball, are proud to announce that right-hander Tyler Beede has been named the Eastern League's Pitcher of the Week for the period of August 29-September 5. The award arrives in the wake of Beede winning the Eastern League ERA title (2.81) and tossing just the third complete-game shutout in team history on August 29th at The Diamond. The Giants top-pitching prospect joins Chris Heston (2.28, 2012) and Eric Surkamp (2.02, 2011) as Flying Squirrels pitchers to lead the league in earned run average. Earlier in the week Beede was also named the Flying Squirrels Pitcher of Year, winning the award in his first full year at Double-A. The Flying Squirrels 2016 season ended on Labor Day and the 2017 season will begin April 6th against the Hartford Yard Goats.

Tyler Beede, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Richmond Flying Squirrels, has been selected as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of August 29th-September 5th. The 6'3", 210 lb. hurler started a pair of games for the Flying Squirrels last week and had a record of 2-0 with 13 strikeouts and a 0.60 ERA. Beede, who is a native of Worcester, Massachusetts, made his first start of the week on August 29th against visiting Hartford and pitched a two-hit shutout in Richmond's 4-0 victory. He tied his career high with 11 strikeouts and walked just one batter while throwing the first complete game of his career. Tyler made his second start on Sunday against visiting Altoona and earned the win in Richmond's 6-2 victory. He gave up two runs, one earned, on five hits while striking out two batters and walking two over six innings. With that performance Tyler lowered his ERA to 2.81, which led the Eastern League. The 23-year old tied for the league lead in wins (2) last week and also ranked among the leaders in strikeouts (13-tied 2nd), batting average against (.140), ERA (0.60-4th) and WHIP (0.67-4th). Tyler, who is rated by MLB.com as the second best prospect in the San Francisco organization, was selected by the Giants in the first round of the 2014 draft out of Vanderbilt.
