Lakeland Flying Tigers Roster Announced - Former Gator All-American Alex Faedo to Open Season in Lakeland

Lakeland, FL - The Lakeland Flying Tigers have announced their tentative 2018 Opening Day roster. It will feature seven top 10 draft picks and 10 players who appeared in games for the Flying Tigers in 2017.

 

Starting pitcher Alex Faedo headlines a list of prospects. Faedo is currently rated the third-best prospect in the Detroit Tigers organization by MLB.com. He was selected by the Tigers in the first round (18th overall) of the June 2017 draft from the University of Florida. Faedo helped Florida to its first national title in 2017, earning College World Series Most Outstanding Pitcher honors after throwing 14.1 scoreless innings with 22 strikeouts in two starts. He also earned All-American honors and Second Team All-SEC honors as a junior, posting a 9-2 record with one save, a 2.26 ERA and 157 strikeouts in 20 appearances, including 19 starts.

The roster includes 13 pitchers, 2 catchers, 6 infielders, 4 outfielders and 3 players on the disabled list.

The rotation will also include Austin Sodders, Gregory Soto, Anthony Castro and Tom de Blok. Soto was the Detroit Tigers Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2017 and is currently rated the eighth-best prospect in the Tigers organization by MLB.com.

 

19-year-old shortstop Isaac Paredes leads the Flying Tigers offensive firepower. Parades is currently rated the seventh-best prospect in the Tigers organization by MLB.com and was acquired from the Chicago Cubs in the trade involving Alex Avila. He was regarded as the Cubs second-best prospect prior to the trade. Outfielder Daz Cameron is currently rated the ninth-best prospect in the Tigers organization by MLB.com and was acquired from the Houston Astros in

the trade involving former Lakeland Tiger Justin Verlander. Cameron was originally drafted 37th overall by the Astros in the 2015 draft after being named Georgia's Gatorade High School Player of the Year.

 

Mike Rabelo begins his first season as manager of the Flying Tigers after managing the West Michigan Whitecaps in 2017. This season will mark Rabelo's fifth season as a minor league manager in the Tigers organization. The 2017 Midwest League Manager of the Year helped guide the Whitecaps to a Midwest League leading 91 wins.

 

Tim Garland (hitting), Mark Johnson (pitching) and Chris Vick (Athletic Trainer) all return for their second seasons with the Flying Tigers. Francisco Contreras (coach), Matt Rosenhamer (strength and conditioning coach) and Austin Reed (video coordinator) begin their first seasons in Lakeland.

 

The Flying Tigers open the 2018 season on Thursday, April 5 against the Tampa Tarpons (Yankees). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and gates to Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium will open at 5:00 p.m. The first 2,000 fans that enter the ballpark will receive a 2018 Flying Tigers magnet schedule. Following the game will be a spectacular fireworks show.
