FORT MYERS, Fla. - Jose Miranda broke a scoreless game with a sixth inning home run, while Charlie Barnes and Jovani Moran combined to hold down Daytona, as the Miracle took Game 1 of the Florida State League Championship Series, 3-1, on Friday night at Hammond Stadium.
Barnes (1-0), in his final start of the season, tossed 6.2 shutout innings. The Sumter, South Carolina native scattered seven hits.
Miranda's blast, his second of the post-season, came with two out. The Miracle third baseman is now 5-12 in the post-season with five RBI's, all of which have come with two out.
Travis Blankenhorn pushed the Miracle lead to 3-0 with a two-out RBI single to right in the seventh.
Daytona scored a run in the eighth on a Taylor Trammell single. But Jovani Moran recovered to strike out back-to-back batters with the bases loaded to preserve the 3-1 lead.
Then in the ninth, Moran struck out the side after a fielding error to notch his first save of the playoffs.
The left-hander finished with six punchouts in 2.1 innings. He yielded one run.
Daytona's Packy Naughton (0-1), surrendered three runs in seven innings. Naughton (0-1), who was making his High-A debut, allowed nine hits.
The game stayed scoreless until Miranda's blast due in large part to the play of Aaron Whitefield. The Miracle center fielder started an 8-2 double play to end a threat in the third with a laser to the plate.
Fort Myers is now 3-0 in the playoffs and has won all three games by identical 3-1 scores.
Game two of the best-of-five series is on Saturday night in Fort Myers. First pitch is slated for 7:00 p.m.
