Four-Run Seventh Helps Keys Earn First Sweep

Baumann Turns in Quality Start in Win

WILMINGTON, DE-The Frederick Keys scored four times in the seventh inning to top the Wilmington Blue Rocks 5-2 on Thursday night at Frawley Stadium. It is the first sweep for the Keys in 2018 and ensured a split of the abbreviated six-game roadtrip.


In the seventh, the Keys (23-29) sent all nine men to bat as the visitors broke a 1-1 deadlock. Yojhan Quevedo opened the inning with a double off the leftfield wall, advanced to third on a sac-bunt by Cole Billingsley and scored on a wild pitch by Carter Hope.


Two walks and a fielding error by first baseman Xavier Fernandez loaded up the bases with one out for Wilson Garcia . Attacking on the 1-0 pitch the former Phillies farmhand cleared the bases with a double to right. Plating men from second and third, Preston Palmeiro also scored after the relay throw home was dropped by the catcher Meibrys Valoria.


On the mound, Michael Baumann worked around several early inning walks to deliver six innings of one-run baseball. Making his third Carolina League start, Baumann (2-0) scattered four hits, walked four and struck two to earn the win. He threw 86 pitches (50 strikes).


The Blue Rocks (21-32) got on the board bottom of the first inning. Nick Heath walked to open the game, advanced to second on a sac-bunt and to third on a ground out before Fernandez collected an infield single. Fernandez later doubled in the ninth and scored on an infield single by Oliver Nunez.


Tyler Erwin closed things out. Erwin tallied his third save after entering with the tying run in the on-deck circle in the eighth. In 1.1 innings, the southpaw allowed one run on two hits.


Hope (1-1) suffered the loss for Wilmington. In 1.2 innings, the right-hander gave up four runs (three earned) on three hits. He walked three.


The Keys return to Nymeo Field on Friday night when the Lynchburg Hillcats come to town for a three-game series. Right-hander Cristian Alvarado (5-3, 3.57) faces Hillcats righty Eli Morgan (1-0, 3.00). First pitch is slated for 7:00 p.m and the broadcast can be heard on and the TuneIn app.
