Frederick MD – For the first time in 2021, the Frederick Keys are victorious after defeating the Mahoning Valley Scrappers by a final score of 9-7 on Saturday night.

The Keys started Luis Guerrero on the mound who allowed zero hits in three innings of work and just one earned run. The Scrappers scored a run on three walks in the top half of the 1st inning.

Frederick started scoring immediately in the game as Dominique Collie led the game off with a walk and then swiped second base. Collie advanced to third on a wild pitch. With two outs in the inning, Tyler Doanes drove home Collie to tie the game at 1-1.

In the 3rd inning Brendan Tinsman led off with a double, one of two in the game. He came around to score the go ahead run on a single by Kevin Jimenez and the Keys would not look back after gaining a 2-1 lead.

The Keys big inning tonight was the 4th when they brought 11 men to the plate knocking Scrappers starter Jimmy Burnette out of the game. JP Fullerton led the inning off with a single. Eddie McCabe added a single of his own to leave runners at first and second. Yareb Martinez drew a walk in a long at-bat, that proved to be Burnette’s final of the game. Garrett Schoenle came in and walked Collie with the bases loaded to start his outing. Brendan Tinsman knocked home a pair on the first pitch that he saw to give Frederick a 5-1 lead. Once again Jimenez came up and drove in two runs on a seeing eye single for a 7-1 Keys lead.

Mahoning Valley threatened in the 6th and 7th inning scoring three runs in both frames to cut Frederick’s lead 9-7. Dylan Tebrake came in for Frederick to clean up throwing an inning and a third allowing zero runs on one hit.

In the 9th, Frederick looked to newcomer Adam McKillican to slam the door. McKillican was able to pitch a 1-2-3 9th with a dramatic strike out against Sam Crail to end the game.

The win for the Keys is the first win since August 28, 2019. Frederick will look to highly touted draft prospect Ronan Kopp to make his first start in Sunday’s series finale. The Keys will go for their first series win of 2021. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM and will be the second Dogtopia Sunday Funday of the season. Fans can play catch on the field from 12-12:30 prior to the game. For more information on the Frederick Keys please contact JJ Michalski at [email protected].
