FREDERICK, MD-Former Keys starting pitcher, David Hess , became the 160th ex-Key to reach the Major Leagues this weekend. Starting game one of a doubleheader this past Saturday for the Orioles, Hess is the first individual with Frederick ties to reach the Major Leagues in 2018.

Facing the Tampa Bay Rays, Hess, 24, earned the win and delivered a quality start. Over six innings, the Tennessee native surrendered three runs on six hits to go with three strikeouts. Retiring 16 of the final 18 batters he faced, Hess' catcher was former Keys battery mate, Chance Sisco . Additionally, Hess became the first Oriole pitcher to start and win his Major League debut since another ex-Key, Mike Wright, did so on May 17, 2015.

Before being recalled by the Orioles, Hess was 2-0 with a 2.12 ERA (29.2 IP/7ER) with the Triple-A Norfolk Tides. He walked 12 and struck out 29 while opponents were batting .196 against him.

Added to the Orioles 40-man roster last November, Hess spent 2017 with the Double-A Bowie Baysox going 11-9 with a 3.85 ERA (154.1 IP/66ER) in 27 games (26 starts). The 11 wins for Hess ranked fourth in the Eastern League, while the 154.1 frames led all O's minor leaguers.

Hess spent most of the 2015 season with the Keys, going 9-4 with a 3.58 ERA. One of the Carolina League's best pitchers after the all-star break, the right-hander went 7-0 with a 1.34 ERA in 12 contests and held opponents to a .182 average.

Drafted by the Orioles in the fifth round of the 2014 draft out of Tennessee Tech, Hess became the first former Golden Eagles player to pitch in an MLB game.

The Keys begin a three-game series against the Lynchburg Hillcats on Tuesday night at City Stadium. Right-hander Ofelky Peralta (1-3, 5.04) starts for the Keys and will be opposed by Hillcats right-hander Micah Miniard (0-1, 5.16). First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m and the broadcast can be heard on frederickkeys.com and the TuneIn Radio App.

On Friday, May 18, the Keys return to town to face the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. It is Family Fitness Weekend sponsored by Premiere Dental Arts, while highlights include an All Caps Night with an appearance by former Capital Mike Knuble and Hail to the Redskins Night, featuring a visit by former players Santana Moss and Gary Clark (presented by PMSI).
