FREDERICK, MD - The Frederick Keys (17-27, 46-67) and Potomac Nationals (26-20, 56-57) combined for seven home runs as they split Wednesday evening's doubleheader at Nymeo Field. The Keys took game one 3-2 thanks to a pair of home runs from Jomar Reyes and Cole Billingsley while the P-Nats claimed game two 5-3, jumping ahead on solo shots from Telmito Agustin and Gilbert Lara. Cameron Bishop (1-8) picked up his first victory of the season with an outstanding performance while Diogenes Almengo (S, 11) earned the save in game one.
Bishop was efficient through the first two frames but ran into trouble in the third. Omar Meregildo led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a ground-out. Bishop then gave up a walk which brought Cole Freeman to the plate. Freeman dropped a bunt down and Bishop misplayed it, allowing the run from third to score. Zach Jarrett then bailed him out with a diving catch to end the inning.
The Keys responded immediately in the bottom of the inning. Billingsley singled and stole second at the start of the inning and Reyes blasted his 8th home run of the year to give the Keys a 2-1 lead. Billingsley added to it in the fifth inning with a solo shot to right field to make it 3-1.
Bishop cruised after the third as he faced two over the minimum over the next three frames. He completed six innings and allowed the one run on three hits while striking out a pair.
Almengo came in relief in the seventh. He gave up a home run to Meregildo put retired to next two batters to seal the win.
Potomac starter Ryan Tapani (0-1) took the loss after allowing three runs on six hits.
In game two, it was Will Robertson who got things started with a bang. He slugged his third Carolina League home run to give the Keys a brief 1-0 lead as the P-Nats struck back quickly, tying the game on an RBI groundout from Austin Davidson.
In the fourth inning, J.C. Escarra ripped a line drive over the right-field wall to make it 2-1 Keys, but once again Potomac answered right back to start the fifth as Agustin and Lara hit the tying and go-ahead home runs.
Blaine Knight (1-9) struggled in the sixth inning as well as the P-Nats tallied a pair of runs to make it 5-2. Knight finished strong, however, as he completed seven innings for the second straight start. He allowed five runs on seven hits, four of which were doubles, and did not walk a batter.
Luis Reyes (3-5) picked up the win in relief. He gave up a run in the seventh inning and struck out a pair over three innings.
The Keys and P-Nats are set for a rubber match on Thursday, August 8 to finish out the three-game series. LHP DL Hall (4-4, 3.36) takes the mound for Frederick against LHP Nick Raquet (8-8, 4.46) for Potomac. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00pm.
