FREDERICK, MD-A six-run first inning led the Lynchburg Hillcats (37-42, 8-4) to a 10-1 win over the Frederick Keys (38-43, 3-9) on Monday night at Nymeo Field. The loss was the Keys fifth in a row.
As part of a five-hit game, Ernie Clement led off the game with a single. He scored one batter later when Mitch Longo hit a double to left-center field. Conner Capel followed with a two-run home run, the first of three long balls in the inning. After Li-Jen Chu singled, Trenton Brooks hit a two-run home run to right. Cristian Alvarado then retired the next two batters before allowing a solo home run to Anthony Miller, capping off the six-run first for Lynchburg.
The Hillcats would produce another run in the second. Clement singled and Longo doubled to move Clement to third. Chu plated Clement with a sacrifice fly.
In the third, Lynchburg added another two-run home run. Jorma Rodriguez singled, and two batters later Dillon Persinger hit his third home run of the year to make it 9-0. The four home runs allowed was a career-high for Alvarado.
The Keys scored their run in the sixth. T.J. Nichting hit a one-out single up the middle, and advanced to second on a balk. Wilson Garcia then hit a single to right to plate Nichting and made it 9-1.
In the ninth, Lynchburg extended their season-high by hitting their fifth home run. Brooks launched his second of the game to push the score to 10-1.
Eli Morgan (5-2) picked up the win for Lynchburg. He allowed one run over six innings while striking out four. Alvarado (7-6) took the loss. He allowed nine runs on 11 hits while striking out four.
The Key and Hillcats conclude their series on Tuesday night. Right-hander Mike Baumann (4-1, 3.55) makes the start against Hillcats right-hander Zach Plesac (4-4, 5.18). First pitch is scheduled from 7:00 p.m., and the game can be heard on frederickkeys.com and the TuneIn Radio app.
