FREDERICK, MD-The Wilmington Blue Rocks (40-47, 9-8) scored five times over the first two innings on their way to an 8-3 victory against the Frederick Keys (40-49, 5-15) on Tuesday night. On a Major League rehab assignment, Chris Tillman (0-1) made the start for the Keys and took the loss.
The right-hander allowed six runs (four earned) on five hits over 6.1 innings. He walked three and struck out four, making two errors and throwing two wild pitches. Tillman allowed five of his six runs over the first two frames. Following a walk with one out in the third, he set down nine in a row before allowing back-to-back singles in the sixth.
On the second pitch of the game, Nick Heath hit a home run to give the Blue Rocks a 1-0 lead. In the second inning, Meibrys Viloria led off with a walk and Travis Jones was hit by a pitch. Rudy Martin then laid down a bunt, and a throw from Tillman pulled Preston Palmeiro off the bag at first to allow Martin to reach.
Angelo Castellano followed with a sacrifice fly, while a Vance Vizcaino RBI single made it 3-0. Following a Heath walk, D.J. Burt hit a sacrifice fly, and Vizcaino scored on a wild pitch which pushed the Blue Rocks lead to 5-0.
The Keys got to within two in the fourth. Jake Ring drew a one-out walk while Daniel Fajardo followed with a single. That set up Alejandro Juvier, who launched his first Carolina League home run on the first pitch he saw to make it 5-3 Wilmington.
A sixth run scored for the Blue Rocks in the sixth. Travis Jones singled, then proceeded to steal second and advance on a wild pitch on back-to-back pitches. With Jones at third, Martin hit a bouncing ball into right field for an RBI single.
The scoring would conclude in the ninth on a pair of Blue Rocks runs. Angelo Castellano drew a walk with one out. Vizcaino then singled, and Heath drove in Castellano with a single. A Burt single loaded the bases for Gabriel Cancel. Cancel then grounded out to second to score a run and move the lead to 8-3.
Earning the win for the Blue Rocks, Nolan Watson (2-1) surrendered three runs on the Juvier home run. The right-hander allowed 10 hits over seven innings while walking one and striking out three.
The two teams continue their four-game set on Wednesday night. Two left-handers take the mound, as Zac Lowther (3-1, 1.73) makes the start for the Keys against Daniel Tillo (2-1, 3.55) for the Blue Rocks.
