FREDERICK, MD-On Monday, the Baltimore Orioles announced additions to their 40-man roster and two former Frederick Keys were added. Right-handed pitcher, David Hess (2015) and catcher, Austin Wynns (2014-16) each had their contracts selected. By being added to Baltimore's 40-man roster, Hess and Wynns cannot be selected in this year's Rule 5 draft on December 14.
Hess, 24, spent all of 2017 with the Double-A Bowie Baysox. In 27 games (26 starts) the Tennessee native went 11-9 with a 3.85 ERA. In 154.1 innings, Hess allowed 137 hits, walked 53 and struck out 123. Opponents batted .235 against him. Closing the year strong, the former Tennessee Tech product went 3-2 with a 2.25 ERA in his last six starts.
The right-hander finished second in the Eastern League in innings pitched, third in strikeouts and batting average against and tied for third in wins. He was twice named EL Pitcher of the Week in 2017. With the Keys in 2015, Hess went 9-4 with a 3.58 ERA. Outstanding following the all-star break, Hess went 7-0 with a 1.34 ERA in 12 starts and held opponents to a .182 average. The Tennessee native was originally drafted by the Orioles in the fifth round of the 2014 draft.
Wynns, 26, also played 2017 with Bowie. In 105 games, he slashed .281/.377/.419 to go with 10 home runs and 46 RBIs. The California native finished fifth in the circuit in on-base percentage. Behind the plate, the California native led all EL catchers in fielding percentage (.998) and was third in caught stealing percentage (.382).
In parts of three seasons with the Keys, Wynns slashed .285/.348/.403 with eight home runs, 52 RBIs and 27 doubles in 130 games. Following the 2016 campaign, Wynns was assigned to the Arizona Fall League, where he played for the Peoria Javelinas. This past spring he was a non-roster invitee to Major League spring training.
The Orioles 40-man roster is currently at 33 men.
