Woodbridge, VA---The Carolina League announced today that Potomac Nationals' RHP Jefry Rodriguez (3-1, 3.19) has been named the Carolina League Pitcher of the Week for the week of May 1st to May 7th. It is the first weekly award for Potomac in 2017 and the first time in Rodriguez's career that he has received a league-wide Pitcher of the Week award.
Rodriguez made one start last week and nearly no-hit the Down East Wood Ducks on 5/3 in his most dominant performance in five starts this season. The 23-year-old held the Wood Ducks hitless through the first seven innings, but surrendered a leadoff double to DH Chuck Moorman in the top of the eighth, which ended his no-hit bid. The right-hander finished the inning and wrapped up the outing with eight one-hit shutout innings. With eight strikeouts, Rodriguez matched his season-high set initially against Lynchburg on 4/20. Through his first five starts in the Carolina League, Rodriguez holds a 3-1 record with a 3.19 ERA and has held opposing batters to a .205 batting average. He leads the P-Nats in innings pitched (31.0) and in strikeouts (32) so far in 2017.

Rodriguez signed with the Washington Nationals on 1/17/12 as an International Free Agent. The righty is in his fourth full season of professional baseball and reached the Carolina League for the first time at the start of 2017. He spent all of 2016 with the Hagerstown Suns, where he went 7-11 record with a 4.96 ERA in 25 starts. Rodriguez will look to build off his dominant start and award, as he is set start on Tuesday against the Wilmington Blue Rocks (Kansas City).
