Noonan, Four Others Added To Giants' 40-Man Roster

Grizzlies infielder added to Major League roster for first time in his career
November 21, 2012
Nick Noonan was among five players added to the San Francisco Giants' 40-man roster on Tuesday. Noonan joins Jake Dunning, Chris Heston, Juan Perez and Edwin Escobar as new additions to the parent club's roster, which protects them from being drafted by other Major League teams in the Rule 5 Draft.

Noonan led the Grizzlies in hits and games played in 2012, his first full season at the Triple-A level. He batted .296 (145-for-490) with 26 doubles, three triples, nine home runs and 62 RBIs last season. The nine home runs matched his career-high while the 145 hits set a new personal-best.

The 23-year-old primarily played shortstop for Fresno while also appearing in games at second base and third base.

On May 20th at Round Rock, Noonan set the Grizzlies' record for RBIs in a single game with eight. He also matched a franchise record for hits in a game with five on June 12th against Sacramento.

Noonan was named the Grizzlies' 2012 Offensive Player of the Year.

Dunning, Heston and Perez spent all of the 2012 season with Double-A Richmond. Heston enjoyed a breakout campaign as he was named Eastern League (EL) Pitcher of the Year as well as a midseason and postseason All-Star in the EL. Dunning made 44 relief appearances for the Flying Squirrels, his first season in Double-A. Perez, meanwhile, has spent each of the last two seasons in Richmond. In 2012, he batted a career-best .302 in 126 games while adding 10 home runs, 53 RBIs and 18 stolen bases.

The left-handed Escobar started 22 games for the Class Low A Augusta GreenJackets in 2012, posting a 2.96 ERA. He struck out 122 and walked 32 in 130 2/3 innings.

The deadline for all MLB clubs to add minor league players to their 40-man rosters was 8:59 PT on November 20th. Players first signed at age 18 must be added to 40-man rosters within five years or they become eligible to be drafted by other organizations through the Rule 5 Draft. For those players signed at 19 years old, they are to be protected within four years.

The Rule 5 Draft will take place on December 6th at the Winter Meetings in Nashville, Tennessee.
