Astros defeated by Blue Jays

June 23, 2013

Bluefield, WV - The Bluefield Blue Jays hosted the Greeneville Astros in game three of their season-opening series on Saturday night. After splitting the first two games, Bluefield defeated the Astros by the same 5-0 score that they had in game one of the series.

Neither team had much going through the first two innings, but the Blue Jays took a lead they never relinquished in the third. Following a Garrett Custons single, D.J. Davis hit his second triple in as many nights to put the Blue Jays up 1-0. The very next inning, Bluefield tacked on another run with a sacrifice fly by Melvin Garcia to score Eric Arce, who had initially got on base with an error.

The Astros continued searching for more production from their bats after having two hits through five innings, but they only got into a deeper hole in the sixth. After two quick outs to start the inning, Bluefield loaded the bases with two singles and a hit batter. Matthew Dean then scored on a fielder's choice before D.J. Davis struck again. Davis hit a ground ball single to center field to plate the final two runs of the night.

Greeneville right-handed pitcher Jandel Gustave started for the Astros and pitched 5.0 innings, giving up five hits, two total runs, one earned run and struck out five in defeat. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays had three pitchers combine to give up two hits and no runs.

Bluefield starter Tom Robson pitched 4.0 innings, surrendering one hit and two walks while Jairo Labourt pitched the next 4.0 innings with similar numbers to notch the win.

Greeneville will host the Elizabethton Twins in their home opener at Pioneer Park on Sunday as they begin a six-game homestand. First pitch is set for 7:00pm with fireworks to follow the game.
