Bonifay earns first managerial win

Bluefield, WV - The Greeneville Astros (1-1) evened up their season-opening road series against the Bluefield Blue Jays (1-1) with a 9-5 victory on Friday night. It was the first career win for Greeneville manager Josh Bonifay.

Jack Mayfield led off the game for the Astros with a single on a line drive to center field and eventually made his way around the bases to score on a wild pitch. One inning later, with the bases loaded, Angel Ibanez scored on a ground out. Then, Marc Wik immediately followed with an RBI-triple and Darwin Rivera connected on a line drive single to right field that scored Wik to push the Astros lead to 4-0.

Bluefield cut the Astros' lead in half in the third inning when they scored on a D.J. Davis RBI-single and a wild pitch. Then, after a scoreless fourth inning, both clubs plated three runs apiece over the next two innings as the Astros maintained their two-run lead at 7-5.

The Astros extended their lead in the seventh inning by scoring on a passed ball and scored one final time in the ninth inning on a Juan Santana RBI-single.

By the end of the night, five Greeneville batters had a multi-hit game. Marc Wik, Darwin Rivera, Edwin Gomez and Juan Santana each had two hits while Angel Ibanez had three.

Greeneville's pitchers struck out 16 batters, led by a career-high eight strikeouts from left-handed starter Christopher Lee in just 3.2 innings. Tyler Brunnemann, making his professional debut, picked up the win after pitching 1.1 innings and giving up one run on two hits. Then, after two innings with Alan Abreu, left-hander J.D. Osborne pitched the final two innings and closed the game to earn a save in his first professional appearance.
