BayBears use five-run fifth to even Series with Generals

JACKSON, TENN. (SEPTEMBER 12, 2012) - The Mobile BayBears evened the Southern League Championship Series at 1-1, with a 7-2 victory over the Generals at Pringles Park. The BayBears used a five-run fifth inning and out-hit Jackson 11 to 5 on Wednesday night.

Former Mariner farmhand Matt Mangini had a big night for Mobile and started it in the fourth with an RBI double off the left field wall. That double put Mobile up 1-0.

The BayBears sent eight hitters to the dish in the fifth inning and scored five runs. Even Frey picked up an RBI single and Alfredo Marte drove in a run with a double and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Mangini capped the inning off with a 2-run homer to right. Mobile led 6-0.

Jackson chipped into the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when Stefen Romero brought in Denny Almonte and Brad Miller with a double to right. Mobile led 6-2 after five innings.

Mobile capped off the scoring in the top of the ninth against Jackson reliever Jose Jimenez. Michael Freeman picked up his second double of the game that scored David Nick and made the final score 7-2.

James Gillheeney (1-1) suffered the loss and allowed 6 runs on 9 hits in 5.0 innings of work. Gillheeney struck out 4 and walked none. Forrest Snow pitched 2.0 scoreless innings of relief and Jonathan Arias added 1.0 scoreless inning.

Offensively Stefen Romero and Brad Miller were each 2-for-4 at the plate and combined for four of the Generals five hits.

Mobile starter David Holmberg (1-1) earned the win and allowed 2 runs on 5 hits over 6.2 innings. Holmberg struck out 2 and walked 2.

The Generals and BayBears will see the Championship Series shift to Mobile for game three on Thursday night, with first pitch at 7:05 p.m. RHP Taijuan Walker (0-1, 1.23) starts for Jackson against RHP Braden Hagens (1-0, 0.00) for Mobile. The Playoffs are presented by Chick-Fil-A. The game will be available on News/Talk 101.5 FM, jacksongeneralsbaseball.com and the Generals TuneIn Radio Station.
