Biscuits blank Generals halting win streak at three Wednesday

Dario Pizzano and D.J. Peterson extend hitting streaks in the loss
July 16, 2014

MONTGOMERY, ALA. (JULY 16, 2014) - The Generals (10-15, 41-53) three-game win streak ended Wednesday as they dropped the series opener with the Montgomery Biscuits (14-12, 49-47) 7-0 at Riverwalk Stadium. The Generals offense was shutout for the eighth time this season and second time during the second half. The Generals still have not seen a winning streak go past three games this season.

Jackson's offense struggled to score as they had eight hits, but all were singles. That coupled with the team going 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and leaving nine men on base led to the Generals being blanked for just the eighth time this season.

Montgomery's offense started early as they loaded the bases with no outs in the first. Cameron Seitzer doubled to score Ryan Brett and Jake Hager with the game's first two runs. Richie Shaffer followed with a three-run homer and the first five batters in the Biscuits lineup had scored to give them the early 5-0 lead.

Starter Matt Anderson (3-4, 5.16) settled down from that point as he finished the first and retired nine Biscuits in a row until the fourth inning. Kes Carter led off the bottom of the fourth with his second long ball of the season. After the next two hitters were retired, Willie Argo doubled and Ryan Brett scored him with an RBI single to increase the lead to 7-0.

That was all the help starter Mike Colla (5-9, 5.00) needed as he tossed 6.0 shutout innings, scattering seven hits and struck out six. Colla earned his fifth victory on the season with the performance as his counterpart, Anderson, took the loss for the fourth time of the year.

D.J. Peterson (2x4) and Dario Pizzano (2x4) each had two-hit nights and extended their hitting streaks to eight, but the rest of Jackson's offense sputtered as they did not have an extra base hit and stranded two runners at third base.

The Generals and Biscuits will play game two of the series Thursday in Montgomery at Riverwalk Stadium. Tyler Olson (3-5, 4.56) will get the start for Jackson as Montgomery will send Dylan Floro (8-7, 2.97) to the mound. The game will begin at 7:05 p.m. and can be heard on 96.5 ESPN, TuneIn Radio and jacksongeneralsbaseball.com.
