Jackson, Tenn. - The Southern League announced its weekly honors for games from July 31 to August 6 on Monday, and Jackson right-hander Joel Payamps was named the circuit's Pitcher of the Week. On August 3, Payamps pitched a complete game seven-inning shutout against the Tennessee Smokies in game one of a doubleheader.
Payamps, 23, allowed just one hit in seven innings of work as Jackson went on to a 4-0 victory Thursday. Carlos Penalver singled with one out in the third inning, but that was it for Tennessee. Payamps would retire the next 11 batters in order before walking Ian Rice in the seventh.
After going six innings without walking a batter, Payamps issued a pair of free passes in the seventh inning. He kept the tying run from coming to the plate by inducing a game-ending double play from Yasiel Balaguert. The shutout was the first for Payamps as a professional, and the first for Jackson in 2017.
