Dragons Take Sunday Series Finale

MIDLAND, Mich. – Wrapping up a six-game series, the Dayton Dragons (5-1) defeated the Great Lakes Loons (1-5) on Sunday at Dow Diamond, a 12-1 final. The Dragons officially claimed the series Saturday night with a 6-5 win.

Dayton knocked in 12 runs on 10 hits, while the Loons scored only one run on seven hits. Great Lakes ended the shutout with their lone run in the bottom of the 8th.

Miguel Vargas and James Outman, both 2019 returners, combine for a 4-for-7 performance. Outman recorded the Loons’ only RBI in the 8th with a one-out single, scoring Vargas from third.

Dayton’s right hander Lyon Richardson (W, 1-0) made his second start of the season, holding Great Lakes scoreless in five innings, walking one and striking out six. Jesus Vargas (L, 0-2) allowed one earned run on three hits for the Loons.

Great Lakes drew a total of 43 walks in the first six games of the season, leading the rest of the High-A Central. The Loons struck out 11 times Sunday, combining for a league-high 64 times in six games.

Another 2019 returner, Kevin Malisheski made his 2021 debut with two earned runs on two hits in an inning. The Loons used six different pitchers in the loss to Dayton.

Following a Monday off day, Great Lakes heads to West Michigan (2-3) for a six game road series beginning Tuesday night, first pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. EDT. Action can be followed online, or live on ESPN 100.9 FM. The Whitecaps only played five games in Fort Wayne after rain cancelled the Sunday series finale. The Loons’ next home game comes on May 18th when the Lake County Captains visit Dow Diamond for a six-game set.
