MIDLAND, Mich. - Despite leading the way from the third inning on, the Great Lakes Loons were pushed to the brink by the Lake County Captains late as they hung on for a 5-4 win to snap a three-game losing streak on Friday night at Dow Diamond.
With the score 5-2 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, Ulysses Cantu tagged Loons reliever Justin Hoyt (H, 1) for a double that scored Will Benson to cut the deficit to two. Midwest League All-Star Andre Scrubb (SV, 2) was then called upon out of the bullpen to try and close the game. After a run scored on a groundout by Oscar Gonzalez, he struck out Nolan Jones looking to end the game.
Brayan Morales and Marcus Chiu each had multi-hit games for the Loons (20-39), including a double for Chiu and triple for Morales. Romer Cuadrado provided some punch with a two-run double in the fifth and Starling Heredia proved to have the winning play as his infield single brought Cuadrado in to score the very next at-bat.
In his last outing against Lake County, Loons starter Alfredo Tavarez and received a no-decision tossing 4.2 innings allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits. Connor Strain (W, 2-0) followed Tavarez and had an excellent outing pitching 2.1 scoreless with two strikeouts.
Kirk McCarty (L, 1-5) picked up the loss for Lake County (25-36) after allowing four runs (all earned) on four hits with seven strikeouts.
The Loons will try to make it two in a row on Saturday night. The first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a Corey Seager Bobblehead presented by MidMichigan Health. There will also be a Fireworks Loontacular presented by Chemical Bank following the game. The homestand is one of the longest of the season as the Loons will be at Dow Diamond through Thursday.
