Loons Split Doubleheader in Dayton

DAYTON, Ohio - The Loons split a rain-delayed double header with the Dayton Dragons on an overcast night at Fifth Third Field to begin a four-game series.
 
The Loons (13-26) took game one 9-4, but Dayton (19-20) retaliated with a 3-0 shutout in game two.
Although the first game was delayed 55 minutes in the fifth inning by rain, the Loons' offense put forth one of its best efforts of the season, even in a seven-inning affair, with a season-high 15 hits. Marcus Chiu hit his fourth home run of the season, and five Loons registered multiple base hits. Jared Walker and Eric Peterson each totaled three knocks and multiple extra-base hits. 
Dayton started one of baseball's top prospects in the first game, right-hander Hunter Greene. The second overall pick in last year's draft allowed four runs on seven hits over 3 1/3 innings with no walks and three strikeouts. In the fourth inning, the Loons' chased the Reds' number-two prospect from the hill in the midst of a four-run, five-hit frame, the most hits in a single inning for the Loons in May.
The Dragons flipped the script in game two and roared to life offensively with a 10-hit performance. The brightest star of game two was Dayton's right-handed starter Tyler Mondile, who threw a seven-inning complete game shutout and only allowed one hit.
It marks the first time the Loons have been one-hit since April 19, 2017 at South Bend, also in a 3-0 defeat. Mondile is the first pitcher to throw a complete game shutout against the Loons since another Dragon, Ryan Olson, did so on April 14 of last season.
Game three of the Loons' four-game series in Dayton begins on Saturday at 7:07 p.m. EDT.
