COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. - After a league-wide off-day on Monday, the Great Lakes Loons tallied just four hits in a shutout loss to the West Michigan Whitecaps. The Loons are now 0-8 vs. the Tigers affiliate this year.
Whitecaps (29-28) starter, Elvin Rodriguez, was coming off a dominant 12 strikeout performance against Lake County in his last start and while not as successful against the Loons, he and West Michigan's bullpen held the Loons to just seven total baserunners.
Rodriguez (W, 4-2) threw five shutout innings before righty reliever Clate Schmidt tossed three scoreless innings and Will Vest tallied his first save of the year pitching a 1-2-3 9th.
Although the Loons had just four hits as a team, Brandon Montgomery turned in a two-hit performance and now has 11 hits in his last six games and is hitting .423 during this stretch.
West Michigan's offense was quite as well, but got enough timely hits to score a pair of runs. Jordan Pearce had an RBI-single in the 1st inning and Darwin Alvarado hit a sacrifice fly in the 4th.
The Loons continue a mini three-game stint away from Dow Diamond on Wednesday with a 7:05 p.m. EDT start. RHP Jose Chacin (0-2, 6.35 ERA) is scheduled to start against the Whitecaps RHP Jesus Rodriguez (2-3, 4.65). Tune-in to radio coverage on ESPN 100.9-FM beginning at 6:35.
The Great Lakes Loons have been the Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers since the team's inception in 2007. Dow Diamond serves as the team's home and also houses the Michigan Baseball Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity, and ESPN 100.9-FM.
