BRISTOL, Va. -- For just the second time this year, Greeneville failed to scratch a run across home plate, as the Bristol Pirates blanked the Reds, 3-0, to take the rubber match of the three-game set and season-series on Saturday night at Boyce Cox Field.
With the loss, Greeneville drops to 19-30 on the season. Bristol's victory improved their overall mark to 23-26.
Scoreless after one, the Bucs grabbed the lead in the bottom of the second. A pair of walks began the inning before a double play moved the lead runner to third. C Zac Susi (3-4, RBI) delivered an RBI single up the middle to put Bristol up, 1-0.
The Pirates added to their lead in the fourth. With no one on and two outs, consecutive singles by 2B Chase Lambert (2-4, 2 R, 2B) and Susi began the rally, while a walk to SS Victor Ngoepe (1-3, BB) loaded the bags. On a 0-2 pitch, CF Jonah Davis (0-4, RBI, 2 SO) was plunked on the hand - forcing in a run - to extend their advantage to two.
Bristol mustered one last insurance run in the eighth. Following a leadoff double to left by Lambert, Ngoepe laid a bunt down the first-base line. The throw to first deflected off of him - allowing Lambert to come home - stretching the Bucs lead to three, 3-0.
Greeneville put a pair of men on base in several innings - the first, eighth, and ninth - but could not come up with the big base hit.
In the final frame, 3B Raul Juarez (1-3) singled and 1B Justin Bellinger (1-3, BB, 2 SO) walked to begin the inning. However, RHP Yeudry Manzanillo (4.0 IP, 2 H, BB, 7 SO) struck out the contest's final three hitters to close out Bristol's victory and his first professional save.
RHP Shane Baz (5.0 IP, 3 H, BB, 6 SO) struck out six over five scoreless innings, earning his fourth win of the year for the Bucs. LHP Jacob Heatherly (4.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 BB, 4 SO) walked five and was saddled with his fourth defeat of the year.
The shutout marked just the second time this year Greeneville's offense has been blanked. The last time came on June 20 - the second day of the season - in an 11-0 loss to the Bristol Pirates. Ironically, Baz was also the starting pitcher for the Bucs that day.
Greeneville will return home on Sunday to open up a three-game set against the Elizabethton Twins at Pioneer Park. RHP Lyon Richardson (0-4, 6.75 ERA) - Cincinnati's No. 20 prospect according to MLB.com - is expected to take the ball in the lid-lifter. The Twins have not yet announced their rotation for the series.
The G-Reds Pre-Game Show will kick off the broadcast at 4:45 p.m. ET, leading up to the 5:00 p.m. ET start at Pioneer Park. Sunday evening's contest can be heard on GreenevilleReds.com or via the TuneIn Radio and MiLB First Pitch apps.
Single-game tickets are still available and can be purchased online at GreenevilleReds.com or by calling the Reds' Ticket Office at (423) 609-7400.
