GREENEVILLE, Tenn. -- CF Mike Siani collected two of Greeneville's six hits, as the Elizabethton Twins shutout the Reds, 6-0, in front of 1,115 fans at Pioneer Park on Tuesday night.
With the loss, Greeneville has now dropped their last four rubber matches and fell to 20-32 on the campaign. Elizabethton's victory improved their overall mark to 29-21.
After the first two innings featured all 12 batters being retired on a whopping 34 pitches, the Twins broke up the scoreless battle in the top of the third.
1B Albee Weiss (2-4, 2 R, 2B) started the inning with a double down the left-field line. Following a pair of pop outs, LF Lean Marrero (1-5, RBI, SO) stroked a single into center - scoring Weiss - to put Elizabethton ahead, 1-0.
The E-Twins would break the game open in the fourth. RF Jean Carlos Arias (1-4, R, 3B) banged a one-out triple into right, but was able to score on the play, as a throw to third went haywire, giving Elizabethton a 2-0 edge. Back-to-back walks continued the rally and a dribbling infield single by Weiss loaded the bases. Subsequently after SS Ricky De La Torre (2-4, R, RBI) ripped a run-scoring base hit to center, C Robert Molina (1-3, 2B, 3 RBI, BB) cleared the bases with a three-run double to right-center, stretching the Twins cushion to six, 6-0.
After the first six men failed to reach, Greeneville would put at least one baserunner on - including five leadoff men - over the game's final seven innings. However, the Redlegs failed to get a baserunner past second base in the contest.
RHP Luis Rijo (6.2 IP, 5 H, BB, 2 SO) earned his first win as a member of the Twins organization, tossing 6.2 shutout frames to garner his fourth win of the year. RHP Daniel De La Fuente (4.0 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO) cruised through the first two frames, but struggled late, taking his first Appalachian League loss in his first start with Greeneville.
Despite the tough loss, the Reds bullpen faired admirably. RHP Manuel Cachutt (2.0 IP, 5 H, BB), RHP Justin McGregor (1.0 IP, SO), RHP Cory Heitler (1.0 IP), and RHP Connor Bennett (1.0 IP, 2 SO) combined to hurl five innings of spotless relief, keeping Greeneville within striking distance.
The shutout of the Greeneville offense marked the third time it has occurred this season and the second time in the last four days. The Bristol Pirates blanked the Redlegs on Saturday night at Boyce Cox Field, 3-0.
Following Wednesday's off day, Greeneville will hit the road to open up a four-game series against the Danville Braves. The series will begin with a doubleheader on Thursday evening to make up for a rainout on Friday, July 6 at Pioneer Park. RHP Josiah Gray (1-1, 2.77 ERA) - Cincinnati's No. 21 prospect according to MLB.com - is expected go for the Reds against RHP Matt Rowland (1-1, 3.02 ERA) in game one. RHP Miguel Medrano (1-3, 7.02 ERA) is projected to take the ball in the nightcap for Greeneville. Danville has yet to name their starter for game two.
The G-Reds Pre-Game Show will kick off the broadcast at 4:45 p.m. ET, leading up to the 5:00 p.m. ET start at Legion Field. Thursday evening's contest can be heard on GreenevilleReds.com or via the TuneIn Radio and MiLB First Pitch apps.
