GREENEVILLE, TN - The Kingsport Mets (1-0) defeated the Greeneville Reds (0-1) 8-3 Tuesday night at Pioneer Park. Switch hitting catcher Carlos Reina doubled from both sides of the plate in the loss.
LHP Jose Salvador (0-1) struck out five over the first three innings, but ran into trouble in the fourth. Jaylen Palmer drew a walk to lead off the inning, stole second, and moved to third on a ground out. Gregory Guerrero's RBI-single put Kingsport on the board. Andres Regnault's two-run home run to right field extended the lead to 3-0.
Reina led off the seventh with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Cristian Olivo's RBI-single to put Greeneville on the board. Olivo came around to score on a LHP Yadiel Flores wild pitch to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Palmer and Scott Ota both walked with one out in the eighth. Cole Kleszcz's single off RHP Tanner Cooper loaded the bases. After Cooper struck out Guerrero, Regnault hit a two-run single right field to run the score to 5-2. Kleszcz later scored on a wild pitch.
Kleszcz's two-run single in the ninth extended Kingsport's lead to 8-2. In the bottom half, Raul Juarez hit a solo home run to left field off LHP Jefferson Escorcha to round out the scoring.
RHP Michel Otanez (1-0) earned the opening day win. He allowed just one hit and two walks over five scoreless innings with eight strikeouts. Salvador took the loss, he allowed three runs on five hits over 3.2 innings. He also walked one and struck out six.
Greeneville looks to even up the series Wednesday night at Pioneer Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM ET. RHP Orlando Noriega will start for the Reds, as RHP Junios Santos starts for Kingsport.
