Augusta, GA-The Augusta GreenJackets blew away the Asheville Tourists 7-2 Saturday evening at Lake Olmstead Stadium. It was the third consecutive win for the GreenJackets and their eighth in twelve days as they improved to 23-41 on the season.
The star of the game was Caleb Baragar who pitched eight innings on the mound for the GreenJackets. He ran into early trouble when the Tourists put up two runs in the top of the first but was able to settle down after that and did not allow another run the rest of the day. It was Baragar's first win of the season.
"My past two starts I felt really good," said Baragar. "I felt like I had my mechanics back and just tried to throw to contact."
Trailing 2-0 going into the bottom of the first, the GreenJackets hit four straight singles to cut the deficit in half. In the third, Sandro Fabian came to bat with the bases loaded and drove in all three runners with a double to give the GreenJackets a 4-2 lead.
"Our team is really resilient right now so I was not worried," said Baragar. "I knew we would score more than two runs. My thought process was to not to let their lead get any bigger and to let the team have my back."
In the fifth, Fabian drove in his fourth run of the game on a single that scored Beltre and extended the GreenJackets lead to 5-2. An inning later, Brandon Van Horn reached on a bunt single with two outs and nobody on. He stole second and then Beltre drew a walk. Skyler Ewing followed with a double scoring both runners to make it 7-2 GreenJackets in the sixth.
The GreenJackets will be back in action Sunday evening to wrap up the first half of the 2017 season vs. the Tourists. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05pm with the gates opening at 4:00pm. It is a Father's Day Celebration as part of Junior Jackets Kids Club Day presented by Associated Credit Union, EdVenture Kids Museum, Pediatric Partners of Augusta, Tum-E Yummies, and PDQ. It is also the third Bark in the Park of the season presented by Garden City Pet. The first 750 fans into the stadium will receive a free golf towel presented by Cintas.
